Sony Corp. said it doesn't plan to introduce a new home console at this year's E3 videogame trade show, deflating expectations that a successor to the company's PlayStation 3 would be on its way soon.Kaz Hirai, who oversees Sony's videogame and consumer-electronics businesses, said the Japanese company always viewed PlayStation 3, which made its debut in 2006, as a product with a 10-year life cycle. Mr. Hirai added that he sees no reason to rush to replace PlayStation RuneScape Gold 3 with a new system.
The E3 trade show, scheduled this year for early June in Los Angeles, is an event at which many videogame-console makers reveal plans for coming systems. New game machines typically are announced about every five years, so there has been a lot of speculation that a new PlayStation might be unveiled at this year's E3.Mr. Hirai's comments on Tuesday followed similar remarks by the head of Sony's videogame division, Andrew House, who said the company wouldn't make an announcement about a PlayStation 4 at the E3 show.Mr. Hirai, who appointed Mr. House for the job, said Sony executives aren't talking about a new home console now and they don't plan to do so at E3."Andy [House] is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3," Mr. Hirai said to reporters during a roundtable discussion at the Consumer Rs Gold Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Sony added that the PS3 is consistently the top videogame console in 100 countries and continues to sell well world-wide.Meanwhile, the company is preparing to begin expanding sales of its new PlayStation Vita handheld videogame console from its initial release in Asia last month. The touch-screen device, which is due to hit store shelves in the U.S. on Feb. 22, includes a processing brain that will be able to power more advanced games than its predecessor.Mr. House said sales so far in Asia, which have surpassed 500,000 units, have exceeded the Runescape money company's expectations.
Separately, Sony Chief Executive Howard Stringer fielded a question during the Las Vegas roundtable about a possible investment in Olympus Corp., the embattled maker of cameras and medical-imaging equipment. Olympus has said it needs to raise capital to restore its battered financial health in the wake of an accounting scandal.Mr. Stringer declined to comment on the matter, saying the situation isn't far enough along.
